What Is Profhilo and Is It Right for Me?

Profhilo is the UK's best-selling injectable moisturiser — but what exactly is it, how does it work, and who is it suitable for? Nurse Heather explains everything you need to know.

What Is Profhilo?

Profhilo is a revolutionary injectable treatment that has taken the UK aesthetics world by storm since its launch. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, Profhilo is not designed to add volume or sculpt facial contours. Instead, it is a highly concentrated hyaluronic acid (HA) preparation — the highest concentration available on the market — that works by deeply hydrating the skin and stimulating the production of four different types of collagen and elastin.

The treatment is manufactured by IBSA Pharma and contains 64 mg of pure hyaluronic acid in a 2 ml syringe. Because it is a pure HA product with no added chemicals or cross-linking agents, it spreads smoothly beneath the skin, remodelling the tissue from within rather than sitting in one place like a filler would.

How Does Profhilo Work?

Profhilo is injected at five specific anatomical points on each side of the face — a technique known as the BAP (Bio Aesthetic Points) protocol. These points are carefully chosen so that the product can spread evenly across the face, reaching the cheeks, jawline, and perioral area from just ten injection sites in total.

Once injected, the high-concentration HA acts as a bioremodeller. It triggers a cascade of biological responses in the skin, stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen types I, III, IV, and VII, as well as elastin. The result is skin that looks and feels genuinely healthier — firmer, more hydrated, and with improved texture and tone.

The treatment is typically delivered as two sessions, four weeks apart, with results lasting up to six months. Many patients choose to maintain their results with a single top-up session every six months thereafter.

What Results Can I Expect?

Profhilo produces a natural, refreshed appearance rather than a dramatic change. Patients consistently describe their skin as looking "glowing," "plumper," and "more alive" after their course of treatment. It is particularly effective for:

  • Skin laxity on the face, neck, décolletage, and hands
  • Fine lines and crepey skin texture
  • Overall skin quality and radiance
  • Dry or dehydrated skin that does not respond well to topical products alone

Because Profhilo works with your body's own biology, results develop gradually over four to six weeks following each session. The improvement is subtle but significant — the kind of change that makes people ask whether you have been on holiday or changed your skincare routine.

Who Is Profhilo Suitable For?

Profhilo is suitable for most adults who are concerned about skin quality, hydration, and early signs of ageing. It is particularly popular with patients in their late thirties and above, though younger patients with dry or dull skin also benefit. It is not suitable for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for those with certain autoimmune conditions. A thorough consultation is always carried out before treatment to ensure clinical suitability.

At Skintap, Profhilo is one of our most requested treatments. Nurse Heather will assess your skin, discuss your goals, and advise whether Profhilo alone or in combination with another treatment — such as Skinboosters or microneedling — will give you the best outcome.

How Does Profhilo Differ from Dermal Filler?

This is one of the most common questions we receive. The key differences are:

  • Purpose: Filler adds volume and structure; Profhilo improves skin quality and hydration.
  • Consistency: Filler is a gel that stays where it is placed; Profhilo is a liquid that spreads through the tissue.
  • Longevity: Filler typically lasts 9–18 months; Profhilo lasts approximately 6 months.
  • Appearance: Filler creates visible structural changes; Profhilo creates a natural glow without altering facial shape.

Many patients choose to combine both treatments — using filler to address volume loss and Profhilo to improve the overall quality of the skin.

Is Profhilo Safe?

Profhilo has an excellent safety profile. Because it contains only pure hyaluronic acid — a substance naturally found in the body — allergic reactions are extremely rare. The most common side effects are mild swelling and small bumps at the injection sites, which typically resolve within 24–48 hours.

At Skintap, all injectable treatments are carried out by Nurse Heather, an NMC-registered nurse prescriber with Level 7 postgraduate aesthetic training. Patient safety is our highest priority, and every treatment begins with a full consultation and medical history review.

How Much Does Profhilo Cost at Skintap?

Profhilo at Skintap is priced from £275 per session. A full course of two sessions is recommended for optimal results. Skintap members receive a discount on treatments as part of their monthly membership benefits.
