Two Treatments, One Goal
If you have been researching injectable skin quality treatments, you have almost certainly come across both Profhilo and Skinboosters. Both are hyaluronic acid-based injectables designed to hydrate the skin from within and improve its overall quality. Both are popular, well-evidenced treatments with strong safety records. But they are not the same product, and they are not always interchangeable.
Understanding the differences between them will help you have a more informed conversation with your practitioner and set realistic expectations for your results.
What Is Profhilo?
Profhilo (manufactured by IBSA Pharma) is a highly concentrated, pure hyaluronic acid preparation containing 64 mg of HA in a 2 ml syringe. It is classified as a bioremodeller rather than a filler or a traditional Skinbooster. Its unique thermal cross-linking technology means that it contains both high-molecular-weight and low-molecular-weight HA, which work together to hydrate the skin and stimulate the production of four types of collagen and elastin.
Profhilo is injected at just five points on each side of the face using the BAP (Bio Aesthetic Points) protocol. Because it is a liquid rather than a gel, it spreads through the tissue rather than staying in one place, remodelling the skin from within. The standard course is two sessions, four weeks apart.
What Are Skinboosters?
Skinboosters is a broader category of injectable treatments that includes products such as Seventy Hyal 2000, Jalupro, NCTF, Restylane Vital, and Skinvive. Unlike Profhilo, most Skinboosters are lightly cross-linked gels that are injected at multiple points across the face (or body) using a technique called micro-papule injection or cannula delivery.
Skinboosters work primarily by delivering HA directly into the dermis, where it binds to water molecules and provides intense, localised hydration. Some formulations also contain amino acids, vitamins, and antioxidants that support skin health. Results tend to be more immediately visible than Profhilo, with a plumping and smoothing effect that can be seen within days.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | Profhilo | Skinboosters |
|---|---|---|
| HA concentration | 64 mg / 2 ml (very high) | Varies by product (typically lower) |
| Consistency | Liquid (spreads through tissue) | Gel (stays more localised) |
| Injection points | 5 per side (BAP protocol) | Multiple micro-papules or cannula |
| Primary effect | Bioremodelling + collagen stimulation | Deep hydration + skin plumping |
| Results onset | Gradual (4–6 weeks) | More immediate (days to 2 weeks) |
| Duration | ~6 months | 3–6 months (product-dependent) |
| Best for | Skin laxity, overall quality, ageing skin | Dehydration, fine lines, dull skin |
| Treatment areas | Face, neck, décolletage, hands | Face, neck, décolletage, hands, scalp |
Which One Should I Choose?
The choice between Profhilo and Skinboosters depends on your skin concerns, your goals, and your budget. Here are some general principles:
- Choose Profhilo if your primary concern is skin laxity, loss of firmness, or overall skin quality. Profhilo's collagen-stimulating properties make it particularly effective for patients in their late thirties and above who are noticing that their skin is becoming less firm and resilient.
- Choose Skinboosters if your primary concern is dehydration, dullness, or fine surface lines. Skinboosters deliver more immediate visible hydration and are often preferred by younger patients or those looking for a "glow" effect ahead of a special occasion.
- Consider combining both if you have multiple concerns. Many patients benefit from a course of Profhilo for tissue remodelling, followed by a Skinbooster treatment to address surface hydration. Nurse Heather can advise on the most appropriate sequencing and timing.
What About Polynucleotides?
It is worth mentioning polynucleotides (PDRN/PN) as a third option in the skin quality category. Products such as Nucleofill, Plinest, and Newest are gaining popularity as an alternative or complement to HA-based treatments. Polynucleotides work by stimulating tissue regeneration at a cellular level, making them particularly effective for patients with very thin, fragile, or sun-damaged skin. At Skintap, we offer polynucleotide treatments from £275 per session.
