August is the ideal month to reverse summer skin damage and begin a targeted recovery plan before the autumn social season. Starting treatments now means your skin will be at its best by October and November.

# Back to School, Back to You: Autumn Skin Prep Starts Now As August arrives and the height of summer begins to fade, there is a distinct shift in the air. The long, hot days of July are behind us, and thoughts naturally turn toward the upcoming change of season. For many, September brings a "back to school" mentality—even if you haven't seen the inside of a classroom in decades. It is a time of routine, structure, and a return to normal life after the unpredictability of summer holidays. At skintap, I always view August as the ideal transitional month for your skin. It is the perfect time to assess the toll that summer has taken—whether from UV exposure, heat, travel, or changes in diet—and begin a targeted recovery plan before the autumn social season begins. Because many of the most effective skin-renewal treatments require time to stimulate collagen and deliver their full results, starting your skin prep in August ensures you will look your absolute best by October and November. ## The Impact of Summer on Your Skin Summer is wonderful for the soul, but it is notoriously difficult on the skin. Even if you have been diligent with your SPF 50, the combination of heat, humidity, air conditioning, and increased UV exposure inevitably leaves its mark. By August, many of my patients visit the clinic complaining of skin that feels thicker and rougher than usual. This is a natural protective mechanism: the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) thickens in response to UV exposure. While this helps protect the deeper layers, it also leads to a dull, lacklustre complexion and can trap oil and debris, leading to late-summer breakouts. Additionally, UV exposure breaks down the collagen and elastin network in the dermis, accelerating the formation of fine lines and skin laxity. You may also notice new patches of hyperpigmentation or worsening of existing melasma. To address these issues effectively, we need to look beyond topical skincare and utilise treatments that actively trigger the skin's own regenerative processes. ## Microneedling: The Ultimate Post-Summer Reset If you are looking for a single treatment to address the multifaceted damage of summer, microneedling is often my first recommendation. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment is unparalleled for improving skin texture, reducing pore size, and breaking up superficial pigmentation. At skintap, I use the SkinPen Precision, which is the only FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market. It works by creating thousands of microscopic channels in the skin, triggering a controlled wound-healing response. As the skin repairs these micro-injuries, it produces a surge of new collagen and elastin. Because the outer layer of the skin is not removed (as it is with some laser treatments), microneedling is incredibly safe and suitable for all skin tones. Starting a course of microneedling in August is ideal. A standard course consists of three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. By beginning now, your collagen production will be peaking just as the festive season approaches, leaving you with a firmer, smoother, and more radiant complexion. ## Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): Harnessing Your Body's Healing Power To elevate the results of microneedling even further, I highly recommend combining it with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. Sometimes referred to in the media as a "vampire facial," this treatment uses your body's own growth factors to supercharge the skin's regenerative capabilities. During a PRP session, a small sample of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma. This golden fluid is packed with proteins that signal the body to repair tissue and build new blood vessels. When applied to the skin immediately after microneedling, these growth factors penetrate deeply through the micro-channels, dramatically accelerating healing and amplifying collagen production. PRP is particularly effective for patients noticing a loss of skin density, under-eye hollowing, or general signs of skin fatigue following the summer months. Because it uses your own biological material, it is entirely natural and carries virtually no risk of allergic reaction. ## Collagen Induction with PDLLA Biostimulators For patients who require more significant structural support and volume restoration, August is the time to consider advanced collagen induction therapy using PDLLA (poly-D,L-lactic acid) biostimulators like JuveLook® and Lenisna®. Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, which simply add immediate volume to a specific area, PDLLA biostimulators work differently. They act as a biocompatible scaffold beneath the skin, stimulating your fibroblasts to produce your own natural collagen over several months. JuveLook® is excellent for overall skin quality, hydration, and fine lines, while Lenisna® provides deeper structural support for mid-face volume loss and jawline definition. Because the results of PDLLA biostimulators develop gradually over three to six months, having your first session in August means you will begin to see genuine, structural improvements in your skin's architecture right as the autumn weather sets in. It is the ultimate investment in long-term skin health. ## Planning Your Autumn Skin Journey The key to achieving beautiful, resilient skin is consistency and forward planning. The treatments that deliver the most profound, natural-looking results are not quick fixes; they rely on your body's biological processes, which take time. By shifting your mindset in August and beginning a structured treatment plan, you can effectively reverse summer damage and build a strong foundation for the colder months ahead. Every patient's skin is unique, which is why I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. If you are ready to start your autumn skin prep, I invite you to book a consultation at the clinic. Together, we can assess your skin's current condition and design a bespoke treatment plan that aligns with your goals. *Nurse Heather* *NMC Registered Nurse Prescriber (06G0964E)* *Founder, skintap*
